Practice management pricing, checked against Smokeball's own page
Smokeball lists four plans and no prices. Here is what each plan is reported to cost per user, what Archie AI adds, what that means for a firm of one to ten people, and a published flat price if the job you want AI for is reading your matter documents.
Smokeball figures are labeled with their source. CaseClerk prices are the ones on our pricing page.
Upload a lease, a contract set or a discovery production and ask what it says. Every answer names the document and page. 25 pages on the house, no card.
Free preview, no account needed: up to 3 files and 10 pages.
Smokeball does not publish its US prices. It sells four plans, Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+, priced by users, plan and contract term. Capterra lists $49 per user per month for Bill and $89 for Boost, with Grow and Prosper+ quoted; Costbench lists $149 a month as the entry price. Archie AI is a separately priced add-on.
For a five person firm that is roughly $2,900 to $8,900 a year before AI. If what you want is AI that reads your matter documents, CaseClerk does that at a published $99, $249 or $499 a month per account, next to the practice management you already run.
Count seats by role
List everyone who works in matters each week. That number, not the number of lawyers, drives the license line.
Ask for one all in figure
Plan, seats, Archie AI and every add-on in a first year number and a renewal year number, in writing.
Separate practice management from AI
Mark which features you need to run the firm and which you want for reading documents. They can come from different vendors.
Test the reading job on a closed matter
Upload a finished matter to CaseClerk and ask the questions your team answered by hand. If it covers the job, you have a second number to hold against the AI add-on.
Smokeball, Filevine and CasePeer run the practice. CaseClerk reads a matter's documents and answers questions about them. Pick by the job you are paying for.

Buy Smokeball to run the firm
If you need billing, trust accounting, matters, documents and time capture in one system built around Word and Outlook, the per user price buys that whole system.
Think twice if AI is the only reason
Moving every matter, bill and trust ledger to a new platform to get a matter assistant is a big project for a reading problem, and Archie is priced on top anyway.
Use CaseClerk for the reading
Upload a matter's leases, contracts, correspondence or production and ask what they say. Each answer names the page, so the lawyer checks it in seconds.
Keep your practice management
CaseClerk does not replace Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther or Smokeball. Firms keep their system of record and add CaseClerk where the reading hours go.
Smokeball's US pricing page names four plans, Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+, and puts a Get pricing button under each one. It says the price depends on the number of users, the plan, the contract term and any optional products. So every number you find comes from somebody else, and they do not agree. Capterra shows $49 per user per month for Bill and $89 for Boost. Costbench and Toolradar show $149 a month as the starting price for every plan. Both can be true for different firms, which is exactly the problem when you are trying to budget.
| Plan or item | Reported figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Bill (billing, trust accounting) | $49 per user per month | Capterra listing for Smokeball. Smokeball's own US pricing page prints no number |
| Boost (adds matter, task, calendar and document management) | $89 per user per month | Capterra listing |
| Grow (adds practice area templates, email management, Communicate with Smokeball AI) | Quote only | Capterra lists Grow and Prosper+ as custom quotes |
| Prosper+ (adds firm insights, lead management, Intake with Smokeball AI, AutoTime included) | Quote only | Capterra, Smokeball pricing page for the feature list |
| Every plan | From $149 per month | Costbench and Toolradar, which list the same starting figure for all four plans |
| Archie AI matter assistant | Add-on, no printed price | Smokeball pricing page lists it as an add-on |
| AutoTime and Intake | Included in Prosper+, add-ons on Boost and Grow | Smokeball pricing page |
| Contract | 12 or 36 month annual terms, auto renewal, 30 days notice | Costbench, from reviewer reports. Capterra lists monthly billing, so ask which applies to your quote |
Treat the $49 and $89 figures as the floor for billing only and billing plus matter management. Grow and Prosper+ are where most of Smokeball's automation and AI live, and those are quoted. If a rep's first number is far above $89 per user, ask which plan and which add-ons it assumes.
Here is what the reported per user rates mean over a year. These are license costs only. Add-ons such as Archie AI, payment processing, e-signature or a virtual receptionist are priced separately and are not in the table.
| Users | At $49 (Bill) | At $89 (Boost) | At $149 (reported entry for all plans) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 user (solo) | $588 a year | $1,068 a year | $1,788 a year |
| 3 users (lawyer plus two staff) | $1,764 a year | $3,204 a year | $5,364 a year |
| 5 users | $2,940 a year | $5,340 a year | $8,940 a year |
| 10 users | $5,880 a year | $10,680 a year | $17,880 a year |
Count seats the way Smokeball will. Paralegals, legal assistants and billing staff who work in matters need a login, so a three lawyer firm often buys six or seven seats. That headcount moves the bill more than the plan does.
Smokeball sells AI in two ways. Some AI ships inside the higher plans: Grow includes Communicate powered by Smokeball AI, and Prosper+ adds Intake powered by Smokeball AI. Archie, the matter assistant, is listed on the pricing page as an add-on, with no price printed.
According to Smokeball's AI page, Archie works inside the matter you have open. It summarizes documents, meetings, deadlines and tasks with links to the source, drafts and reviews documents in Word and Outlook with the matter as context, flags conflicting terms between documents and can check documents against a firm playbook. Smokeball says Archie runs under zero data retention agreements and is visible only to staff assigned to the matter.
That is a real product, and if your firm is moving to Smokeball anyway it makes sense to price Archie with the plan. The question is different if you already run Clio, MyCase or another system and the only reason for the Smokeball call is AI that reads your files. Then you are pricing a practice management migration to get a reading assistant.
Smokeball is worth it when you need practice management built for small firms: billing and trust accounting, matter and document management, practice area templates, automatic time capture with AutoTime and intake, all in one system. Firms that live in Word and Outlook tend to like it, because the documents and email stay attached to the matter.
It is a weaker buy when the firm already has billing and matter management that works and the pain is reading. Hours go into leases, discovery responses, medical records, loan files and contracts, and a new practice management platform does not change how many pages someone has to read. For that job a separate tool priced per account, not per seat, is cheaper and is live the same day.
CaseClerk is not practice management. It does not bill, keep trust accounts, track deadlines or run intake. It reads. You upload the documents for one matter (up to 1,000 files across 18 formats, from PDFs and scans to email and spreadsheets) and ask questions in plain English. Every answer names the document and page it came from, so the lawyer checks the source instead of rereading the file. It also runs contract analysis across the matter: key terms, obligations, risks and differences between versions, each finding cited.
The price is on the page: Solo $99 a month for 2,500 pages, Professional $249 for 10,000 pages, Firm $499 for 30,000 pages, with annual billing at six months' price and an Enterprise tier on quote. It is priced per account rather than per seat, there is no implementation project, and it sits next to whatever practice management you keep. A five person firm paying $89 per seat for Boost pays $445 a month before any AI add-on; the reading job alone costs $99 to $249.
If the platform comparison is really about plaintiff case management, our Filevine pricing breakdown covers what Filevine and its LOIS AI are reported to cost, and CasePeer pricing lists CasePeer's published per user rates.
Smokeball does not print prices on its US pricing page; you request a quote for one of four plans. Capterra lists $49 per user per month for Bill and $89 for Boost, with Grow and Prosper+ quoted. Costbench and Toolradar list $149 a month as the starting price for every plan. Add-ons such as Archie AI are priced separately.
Reported Smokeball cost per user runs from $49 a month on Bill to $89 on Boost, while Grow and Prosper+ are quoted and some trackers put the entry price at $149. A firm's real cost depends on how many staff need seats and which add-ons it buys, so ask for one all in number per user.
Not by default. Smokeball's pricing page lists Archie AI as an add-on and prints no price for it. Grow includes Communicate powered by Smokeball AI and Prosper+ adds Intake powered by Smokeball AI, but the Archie matter assistant is quoted on top of the plan.
Smokeball has no free plan. One pricing guide says a trial is offered on Boost, while Costbench reports no trial. In practice you book a demo and get a quote. If you want to test AI on your own documents first, CaseClerk gives you 25 pages across up to 5 files with no card.
Reviewer reports collected by Costbench describe 12 or 36 month annual contracts that renew automatically and need 30 days notice to cancel, while Capterra lists monthly billing. Ask the rep which applies to your quote and get the term, the renewal increase and the notice period in writing.
If you keep your current practice management and only need AI that reads matter documents, a reading tool priced per account costs less than a new platform priced per seat. CaseClerk answers questions across one matter's documents with the source page named, at a published $99, $249 or $499 a month.
It depends on the plan and seat count, and both sell AI separately from the base license. Compare the per user rate for the features you will use, multiplied by every staff seat, plus the AI add-on. If AI over documents is the deciding feature, price a flat reading tool next to either one before you migrate.
Upload one matter's documents, ask the questions the case turns on, and check every cited page. 25 pages, no card, published prices from $99 a month.
